Financial Analysis of Revision Knee Surgery at a Tertiary Referral Centre as Classified According to the Revision Knee Complexity Classification (RKCC)

Description

This presentation discusses the financial and operational aspects of revision knee surgery at the Sheffield Low Limb Arthroplasty Unit, highlighting its complexity and associated costs. It describes a proposed three-tiered framework by BASK (British Association for Surgery of the Knee) aimed at improving patient care through the centralization of complex cases and better funding mechanisms. Key highlights include the classification of revision knee procedures into three complexity groups, with data from 159 patients revealing that a considerable proportion of cases are complex and often associated with infections.

The study provides detailed financial analysis, using the PLICS system, revealing significant differences in length of hospital stays and costs associated with varying complexities of revision surgeries. The discussion points out existing deficits in NHS reimbursement for these procedures, especially for the most complex cases. It concludes that the RKCC (Revision Knee Complexity Classification) correlates closely with the actual costs and proposes aligning NHS fees more closely with the complexity of the cases to ensure adequate funding and resource allocation. Overall, the findings underscore the increasing workload on major revision centers and the necessity of ongoing financial support and structure adjustments within the health care system.
