BOFAS Interactive Instructional Case 3 Introduction: 59 Year Old with OA Ankle with 16 Degree Deformity, Mild ST Degeneration

Description

In this segment, Rick Brown discusses a clinical case involving a 65-year-old woman suffering from degenerative arthritis of the ankle. Over the past seven years, she has experienced worsening pain that has forced her to abandon beloved activities like golf, country walking, and cycling. Previously she had a knee arthroplasty and is now exploring total ankle replacement options after conducting her own research.

Upon examination, it was determined she has a hindfoot valgus deformity exceeding 15 degrees and a partially correctable forefoot varus. Tenderness was found along the subtalar joint line. Imaging reveals a tilted talus eroding the tibial plafond and MRIs show degenerative changes in both the ankle and subtalar joint.

The discussion will feature experts Jim Carmichael, who emphasizes the decision-making aspects surrounding ankle fusion based on his extensive surgical background, and Paul Halliwell, who will argue the case for total ankle replacement based on outcome assessments. The dialogue begins with Jim presenting his viewpoints on ankle fusion.
