Metal on Metal Hip Replacement Virtual Follow Up Clinic
Description
Amin Abukar, a trainee at Barnet Hospital under the Royal Free Trust, presents his research on metal-on-metal hip arthroplasty and the implementation of a virtual follow-up clinic. He highlights the significance of the guidance issued by the MHRA regarding the follow-up of patients with metal-on-metal hip replacements, pointing out the lack of awareness and the potential to enhance patient care.
The presentation reviews a two-phase study. The first phase involved a retrospective review of patients, where it was found that only 10% had their Oxford Hip Scores documented and only 4% had follow-ups aligned with MHRA guidance, resulting in unnecessary supplementary appointments and significant costs.
The second phase introduced a virtual follow-up clinic that improved compliance with guidelines and heightened patient satisfaction, indicating that such clinics are feasible and beneficial. However, he notes limitations such as the small sample size and accessibility issues for certain patients. Overall, the work emphasizes the need for improved communication and care strategies for metal-on-metal hip replacement patients.
