Hip Displacement in MECP2 Disorders: Prevalence and Risk Factors
Description
In this presentation, Jason Howard discusses a study on hip displacement in MECP2 disorders, such as Rett syndrome and duplication syndrome, which are characterized by developmental challenges and autism-like features. The research highlights that hip displacement, while under-studied compared to scoliosis in these populations, has a prevalence of 36% among patients, with significant risk factors including non-walker status, clinically relevant scoliosis, and refractory epilepsy. Howard describes the methodology of the study, which was a retrospective case control design involving 56 patients with confirmed genetic diagnoses, and emphasizes the need for hip surveillance programs to aid early detection of hip issues before they lead to painful arthritis. The results suggest annual monitoring starting at age four, with recommendations for further multi-institutional studies to refine surveillance strategies.
