Clinical Results and 10-Year Survivorship of the Synthes Epoca Resurfacing Head Total Shoulder Arthroplasty
Description
This presentation delivered by Timothy Karssiens focuses on the clinical outcomes of the Synthes Epoca resurfacing total shoulder arthroplasty, emphasizing a 10-year survivorship study. Introduced in 2007 and notably popular between 2012 to 2019, the Epoca features a thin cobalt chrome humeral component, aimed at preventing joint overstuffing. The study evaluates 59 implants in 50 patients, with a predominance of females and a majority of cases performed for osteoarthritis. Key results showed a high 10-year survivorship rate of 98.2% and a low revision rate of 3.4%. Oxford Shoulder scores improved significantly postoperatively by 28.4 points. The presentation details observed radiographic outcomes, where humeral radiolucency appeared in 3.8% of cases, and glenoid issues in 5.7%. Additionally, the study notes a 15.1% rate of radiographic rotator cuff failure but indicates that it did not significantly affect the Oxford scores. Audience engagement during the Q&A segment highlighted the study's methodology and radiographic assessment practices.
