Major Trauma for Orthopaedic Postgraduate Exams

Description

The presentation is organized by the Ortho FRCS mentor group and focuses on trauma, delivered by Assad. Participants are encouraged to engage by asking questions via the chat box or raising their hands to speak. An extended hotseat session is scheduled following the presentation, prioritizing those preparing for exams in April before others sitting in June.

As the session begins, Assad emphasizes the importance of trauma knowledge, highlighting its relevance in practical scenarios and examinations. He prepares participants to approach trauma cases effectively, underscoring the need to be well-versed in guidelines and treatment protocols. He stresses being proactive and using trauma as a key knowledge area during examinations, where examiners expect candidates to exhibit confidence and authority on the subject.

A substantial portion of the discussion covers key terms and principles related to trauma management. The 'buzzwords' such as hypothermia, hemostatic resuscitation, damage control orthopedics, and permissive hypotension are discussed thoroughly. Techniques for addressing trauma situations effectively are outlined, including the prioritization of patient safety and familiarity with guidelines, protocols, and practical management strategies.

As the talk progresses, specific cases are discussed, including pelvic and open fractures, emphasizing timely interventions and standard practices laid out in trauma care guidelines. The importance of antibiotics administration timing in relation to injury severity is highlighted, along with a call for thorough documentation during trauma assessments.

In conclusion, participants are reminded of the high expectations during trauma assessments, especially regarding their knowledge of current guidelines and protocols. The session wraps up with an invitation to a hotseat discussion, allowing attendees to practice and apply the knowledge they've gained.
