How Can We Optimise Pre-Operative Knee Replacement Education and Prehabilation Lessons Learned From Developing a Virtual Knee School?
Description
This presentation, delivered by Anna Anderson, focuses on the development and implications of a digital tool called the "virtual knee school" for patients awaiting knee replacement surgery. After introducing herself as a physiotherapist and qualitative research fellow at the University of Leeds, she outlines the significance of optimizing preoperative education and prehabilitation due to a backlog caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and associated worsening health conditions among patients while they wait for surgery. Key concepts discussed include the necessity of comprehensive preoperative support and the variability of current interventions in the UK.
The virtual knee school aims to address these challenges by providing structured online resources including education about knee surgery, exercise programs, and healthier lifestyle guidance tailored to individual patient needs. A mixed-methods approach was employed in its development, including a rapid review of literature, surveys with patients and healthcare professionals, focus groups to identify barriers and facilitators to engagement, and refining the website through patient testing. Further, the research highlights the importance of accessibility, inclusivity, and patient support tailored specifically to their needs and circumstances. The overarching meta-inferences conclude that digital tools should enhance personalized preoperative education while ensuring traditional support formats remain available for those less inclined towards digital platforms.
Ultimately, the presentation concludes by emphasizing the need for equity, diversity, and inclusion in health interventions, advocating for comprehensive and adaptable support mechanisms in preoperative care.
