Management of Osteoarthritis at the Base of the Thumb: A Multicentre Service Evaluation Project
Description
In this presentation, Ben Dean, a co-author of "The Management of Thumb Base Osteoarthritis-- A Multicenter Service Evaluation Project," gives a summary of their study which assesses current practices in treating thumb base osteoarthritis across the UK. The research highlights a significant burden of this condition both in primary and secondary care, with very little known about non-surgical interventions being employed. The team gathered data from 15 hospitals and analyzed treatment methods for 150 patients, uncovering variations in non-surgical treatments such as hand therapy, splinting, and steroid injections before surgery. Results showed that while trapeziectomy was the most common surgical procedure performed, there was no clear trend in surgical choices based on patient factors. The conclusion emphasized the need for further high-quality research to better define the effectiveness of interventions and optimize surgical methods for diverse patient needs. Dean expresses gratitude to all participants involved in the study and encourages the audience to read the full findings on the Bone and Joint Journal website.
