RCS Robotics & Digital Surgery: Training and Education - New Opportunities

Description

In a recent presentation, Ricci Plastow discussed the evolving landscape of orthopedic training post-COVID-19. Expressing gratitude for his involvement in the MSK and RADAR working groups, Plastow highlighted the urgent need to adapt training methods to ensure that surgical trainees can complete their programs despite challenges posed by pandemic-related pressures. He proposed that innovative technologies, specifically robotic and digital surgery, play a crucial role in this adaptation.

Plastow emphasized the lack of a coordinated approach to evaluating the various training technologies available, noting the necessity for a systematic and evidence-based review while managing limited budgets. The presentation included insights from a report produced by a dedicated committee of surgical trainees, which outlined opportunities presented by robotic and digital surgery, thereby laying a foundation for integrating these technologies into training practices.

Key case studies were shared, showcasing advancements like Proximie, which allows virtual interactions in the operating theater, alongside innovations such as virtual reality and 3D printing that enhance surgical training experiences away from traditional operating rooms.

Exciting future endeavors were introduced, including fellowships in robotic centers, basic robotic surgery workshops, and collaborations for augmented reality training sessions with Nottingham University. Plastow also mentioned the potential for AI in diagnostics, particularly in hip replacement surgeries, where an algorithm developed at UCL could improve planning and reduce complications.

In conclusion, Plastow called for collaborative efforts among clinicians and the industry to refine and enhance orthopedic training, ensuring that the next generation of surgeons is well-equipped to embrace these technological advancements.
