Live Surgery Tuesday - Distal Radius Osteotomy
Description
In this segment of the live surgery broadcast hosted by Dr. Alejandro Badia, he discusses an intriguing case of malunion of a distal radius fracture, commonly known as a wrist fracture that has healed incorrectly. Dr. Badia explains that such cases are prevalent, as many wrist fractures require surgical intervention from the outset for proper healing. He highlights the consequences faced by a particular patient who opted out of surgery, resulting in a significantly deformed wrist.
The doctor describes the unusual alignment of the wrist, noting it should ideally be tilted between five to ten degrees in the palmar direction, while this patient's wrist is tilted fifty-one degrees dorsally—a staggering sixty degrees deviation from the normal. He also points out that the radius bone is considerably shortened and misaligned compared to the ulnar bone, which leads to a visible ulnar prominence and hand deviation, along with accompanied pain.
Dr. Badia concludes by announcing the surgical procedure scheduled for the following day, which will involve a volar plate distal radius osteotomy, and invites viewers to tune in to the surgery during the morning.
